AWARE
Beauty to the point of sadness.
I am currently working on this Series: Aware (Japanese, pronounced ah-wah-reh)
Aware is the passage of time, the ephemeral, the merging with the whole. From the radiance of absolute beauty to the gentle melancholy of impermanence, the individual melts back into totality. Time reveals itself through the subtle shift of color, finitude through the blending of light and shadow, and beauty through the meeting of form, shadow and light.
The awareness of transience heightens presence, care, and attention, arising in relationship with nature, with others, with time itself. It is felt in the meeting between observer and phenomenon. The recognition that everything passes, and that this passing is precisely what makes life beautiful.
WHISPER
A quiet field of attention.
Whisper, a language of near silence, is formed through the most delicate application of sumi ink. With a very fine brush, layer upon layer is built, creating tones that emerge gradually, almost imperceptibly.
Nothing here declares itself. The work reveals itself slowly, in subtle shifts of density and breath, where presence is held in restraint.
Like a whisper, it asks for proximity. Only by coming close does the work fully appear… not as image alone, but as a quiet field of attention, where what is seen begins to be felt.
INDIGO
As deep as the deep blue sea.
Indigo, long revered in Japanese tradition, is a color shaped through time, patience, and repetition. Drawn from the Persicaria Tinctoria plant, it carries a depth that feels both ancient and alive.
In this series, indigo appears in two forms: as dye and as ink. Applied through immersion and gesture, it moves between control and surrender, where saturation and translucency meet.
The color itself holds a quiet intensity. It recalls the vastness of ocean and sky, yet remains intimate. Sometimes known as the “color of the spirit”, it draws the viewer into a subtle awareness of life held within air, water, and the deep blue sky.
SAUDADE
The presence of absence.
Saudade (pronounced sow-DAH-jee in Portuguese) is a concept that has no direct translation. Saudade speaks to a quiet, enduring longing. It is the presence of absence, the echo of what has been, the tenderness of remembering and missing at once.
In this series, sumi ink unfolds in subtle gradations of gray. Diluted, layered, and restrained, it moves away from contrast and into atmosphere, emerging from the subtle meeting where form softens and edges dissolve.
What remains is not a fixed image, but a feeling. Like saudade itself, these works do not declare; they linger… holding memory in suspension, where absence becomes its own kind of presence.
HI
The latent fire awakens.
Hi (火) (pronounced hee in Japanese) means “fire.” It evokes the elemental force behind movement, transformation, and vitality. It is the pulse of drive, the heat of passion, the energy that animates form.
Traditional Japanese sumi ink is born from fire. Made from soot, a fine carbon powder produced by burning wood, it carries within it the residue of flame. What once burned now becomes mark and gesture.
In this series, that latent fire awakens. From a single sheet, cranes emerge that are not imposed, but revealed… as if the energy of hi had always been present, waiting to take form.
SUMI
The dual nature of existence.
Sumi is an interplay of contrasts, made possible by the depth of Japanese ink,. The series evokes the dual nature of existence: Light and shadow, presence and absence, each arising through the other.
White washi paper and black sumi ink meet here in their most essential form. Together, they become a direct expression of balance — not fixed, but continuously unfolding in the immediacy of the present.
Like the yin and yang inherent in all things, this series invites a quiet introspection into the shifting equilibrium within our own lives, where what appears as opposition reveals itself as a single, living whole.
